East Huron Street


Site- Ruggles saw mill, first mill in Milford. On southwest bank of Huron River, north of East Huron Street. Built in 1832, destroyed after 1856. Presently overgrown with reeds along bank of river. Not disturbed since the mill disappeared. Potential for archaeological investigation.

Site- Armstrong grist mill. On northeast bank of Huron River, north of East Huron Street. Across from site of Ruggles saw mill. Built in 1839, used as slaughter-house in 1870’s, destroyed in 19th Century. Presently overgrown with reeds and brush along bank of river. Not disturbed since the mill was torn down. Potential for archaeological investigation.

103- Two-story  wood frame, aluminum-sided Victorian Gothic upright with story-and-a-half wing.  Porch in ell with modern square wood pillars.  Cross gable above porch.  Elaborate projecting bay on east with brackets and scrolled wood trim.  New enclosed porch in rear.  1867

Site- Eaton Cabinet & Chair Factory.  North of Summit Street,  east of Pettibone Creek.  Nothing left of mill. Historical Marker.  Built ca. 1832, probably gone by 1846. Site is overgrown with brush along creek. Disturbed by construction of waterway to Upper Mill Pond in 1846. Possible potential for archaeological investigation.

101- Two-story  concrete block factory building with large one-story wing.  Aluminum-faced.  Several new additions.  Henry Ford I village industry.  1938

Site- Pettibone Grist Mill.  South end of Upper Mill Pond. Built in1846, burned in 1888, rebuilt, burned again in 1916.  Early foundation remains, with new office building surmounting it.   Historical marker.

Site- Hebbard & Davis Woolen Mill. East of Upper Mill Pond. Built in 1850. New office building on site. Historical marker.  

Site- Tower & Tenny Woodworking Mill.  East of Upper Mill Pond.  Built in 1854, burned in 1870 and rebuilt. Became the Doorknob Factory in 1880’s. Two modern commercial structures on the site have just [1998] been razed and a drugstore is to occupy the site. Historical marker.  

Site- Upper Mill Pond. North of West Commerce Street, south of Summit Street, between North Milford Road and Prospect Hill Shopping Center. Created in 1845.

      Dam built in 1845. Existing dam and present mill race (“waterfall”) modified in 1938 by Henry Ford I when he built existing mill west of pond. Head race east of N. Milford Road, and two flumes running beneath N. Milford Road (ran early mills) still in existence, but covered. 1871 railroad embankment crosses the pond. Pond furnished wate- power for four mill sites.
